They gave me the news today. I'm not going to be on the team. I'm going to be the team's "training liaison." That's fancy government-speak for "you weren't good enough to be in the field, but we're afraid to let you go because of what you know."

Fine. I can live with that. And I can do plenty with what I know.

SUBJECT: WE'VE FOUND OUR "WHITE"

And he's a man of color. Go figure.

Miguel Florés was discovered to have hyper-powers during his four-year enlistment in the Army. Apparently during basic training he completed his two-mile by literally blowing his competition away. As in, displaying wind generation powers of beyond gale-like force.

The suits have taken to calling him "White Whirl." I'm sure that'll go over big.

SUBJECT: TRAINING/BACKGROUND FOR "BATON BLUE"

A kid. I'm being passed over for a 20-year old college sophomore. This is moving beyond degrading. I can't understand why the Benefactor would continue punishing me for something that happened years ago. I don't ever want to become that old and bitter. I'll take care of MY bitterness while I'm still young...

Like this kid. Isaac Grobe. He has the innate ability to throw any object with uncanny accuracy. He just can't miss. He's also a judo master, ascending to the upper echelons of his discipline.

Great. That's really gonna help in the field. "Look out! We're being attacked by a dozen laser-wielding supersoldiers!"

"Hold on. Let me throw my baton at them."

I can't wait.

I'm still not sure why I made the suggestion in the first place if it's my goal to see this project fail. Ruby is a strong leader, experienced fighter and an overall good person. If anyone can make this work, it's her.

So, what the hell's wrong with me, anyway?

Well, well, maybe someone upstairs is listening to me after all. The RWB Project has gotten its first "name" candidate.

Ruby Wells, aka Ruby Red. Yes, that Ruby Red from the hyper-hero duo of "The Big Man and Ruby Red." During a meeting with the suits, I re-emphasized my belief that the team needed some serious muscle and suggested Ruby, since she's a free agent now. And, lo and behold, they listened.
